Croup/Whooping Cough

- Bacteria
- Repeated bouts of violent coughing, which may end with a high-pitched inspiratory whoop and/or vomiting
- May last 1 to 2 months
Transmission:
- Person to person by direct contact with respiratory secretions
Incubation:
- 5 to 21 days, usually 7 to 10 days
Period of Communicability:
- Until 3 weeks after onset of symptoms or until 5 days of antibiotic treatment is completed
We can discuss your child's return to daycare once all the following criteria has been met:

- Your child can eat and drink normally
- Your child can participate in all daycare activities
- Your child's coughing will not keep your child or the other children up during nap time
- At least 7 days have passed since their first dose of antibiotics
- A doctor's note is required stating your child is no longer contagious
- The daycare vomiting policy has been followed
Without Treatment
- At least 15 days have passed since the onset of symptoms/diagnosis
- Cough is 100% gone
- Your child can eat and drink normally
- Your child can participate in all daycare activities
- A doctors note stating your child is no longer contagious is required
- The daycare vomiting policy has been followed
With Treatment - Your child is required to remain home for at least seven (7) days, if not longer.
Without Treatment - Your child is required to remain home for at least fifteen (15) days, if not longer.
