- Bacteria
- Bloody or non-bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal cramps, vomiting, fatigue, malaise and dehydration
- Symptoms usually last fewer than 5 days
Transmission:
- Fecal-oral route, mainly by ingestion of contaminated food: under-cooked meat (especially hamburger) and poultry
- unwashed raw vegetables ( lettuce, spinach, sprouts) and fruits
- unpasteurized milk and apple juice/cider
- Contaminated drinking or recreational water
- Animal to person and person to person can occur
Incubation:
- 1 to 8 days, usually 3 to 4 days
Period of Communicability:
- 1 week or less in adults, but 3 weeks in one third of children
We can discuss your child's return to daycare once all the following criteria has been met:
- Until 2 negative stool cultures are obtained, at least 24 hours apart
- Until 72 hours after the completion of antibiotics
- A doctors note is required stating your child is no longer contagious
- Your child is eating and drinking normally
- The daycare vomiting policy has been followed
- Your child can participate in all the daycare activities
The length of time your child is required to remain home will vary.
